Heroic Labrador Retriever Fights Mountain Lion To Save Two Children And Protect The Family

While the Michaelis family was enjoying their backyard in Cedar Hills, Utah, on Wednesday evening, their hunting Lab Ella began acting protectively while standing near the yard’s rock wall, according to KSL News.

The family didn’t think much of Ella’s conduct at first, but when the dog began staring back swiftly at the kids and nudging one of them to run away, the family opted to return inside.

“She was just being extremely cautious, and my daughter thought it was very concerning,” Ella’s owner, Crystal Michaelis, told KSL News.

Ella later encountered a mountain lion — often known as a cougar — in the backyard, near where the family had been sitting moments before.

“When we opened the rear door, Ella was completely bloodied. “There was blood all over the door and the patio,” Michaelis told the site.

“I wholeheartedly believe she was protecting them because it was within seconds that they came in, and this all happened,” the pleased pet owner told Fox 13 News.

Ella sustained “severe cuts on her head and nose, as well as her tongue, legs, and neck,” as well as a concussion and “more than 30 bites on her body” as a result of her encounter with the wild animal, according to KSL News.

“She’s our hero,” Michaelis told the publication.

The Pleasant Grove Police Department confirmed Ella’s attack on Wednesday and issued a warning to adjacent residents.

“According to [Utah Division of Wildlife Resources] officials, the dog that was attacked in Cedar Hills last night was in fact attacked by a mountain lion,” the law enforcement agency stated on its Facebook page. “The dog is believed to have been attacked in the yard and not in the foothills.”

“Be cautious when using the Murdock Canal.” If you live in Pleasant Grove’s northern end,” the police department cautioned. “At all times, please be aware of your surroundings and know where small children are.” Please think about taking your dogs inside. “Be careful out there.”

According to KSL News, mountain lions are “not uncommon” in the region of Ella’s residence, according to officers with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR). Though the mountain lion that attacked Ella has yet to be found, the animal’s tracks were discovered in the yard where the fight occurred.
